To + 장소

 

특정장소로 가는 문장에서는 전치사 'to'를 사용합니다.(going somewhere)

Let's take the slow boat to China.	Will you come to Dresden with me?
The criminal was sent to jail for 4 years.	It's a long way to Tipperary.
Return to sender was written on the envelope.	Will you drive to the airport?

 

Arrive and Get

 

많이들 들어보셨을 겁니다. 'get to' + (동사 + 전치사)는 무언가를 할 수 있다는 의미로 사용됩니다. 아래 예제를 보면서 이해해 보세요!

• I get to work at 8:45 most mornings = I arrive to work
• I don't get to bed till 10 at night. = I don't go to bed till 10
• Did you get to go to the concert? = Were you able to go to the concert?
• We did get to eat at the restaurant. = we mananged to eat at the restaurant after all

 

동사 arrive는 'at/in' (not arrive + to)과 함께 사용합니다.

• They arrived at the airpot at 8am. = They got there at 8am
• The taxi arrived at the last moment. = The taxi arrived just before it was too late.
• The package should arrive in 2~3 days. = The package is expected to come in 2~3 days
• Will they arrive in time to meet everyone? = Will they be there on time?

 

into / out of

 

'into'는 어딘가에 들어가는 것을 가리키는 표현에서 사용됩니다.(going in or going inside somewhere)

• The family got into their car.
• It looked like the place flew into the building.
• You can go into that cabin and get changed.
• The money is transferred into my account.

'out of' 는 반대로 나가는 것을 표현할 때 사용합니다.

• She took the toy out of the box.
• The metal was taken out of the vice. 

 

To do by...

 

어떻게 무엇을 했다고 표현할 때 전치사 by를 사용합니다.(how we do something). 대표적으로 교통수단과 함께 많이 사용합니다.

There days I prefer to read my news by phone	Would you like to pay by cash
I travel to work every day by bike	I'll pay by credit card
Do you want to receive details by text or by email?	Will it be delieverd by hand or by post?

 

by or on

 

예상할 수 없고 계획에 없던 사건에 대해서는 'by', 예상하고 계획했던 사건은 'on'을 사용합니다.

• We met by chance at the concert.
• We paid him twice by mistake.
• Did you lie to him on purpose?

 

by or with

 

누군가에 의해 무언가가 끝났다면 'by', 누군가가 무엇을 사용해서 사건을 해결했다면 'with'를 사용합니다. 글을 쓰면서도 이해하기 어려우니 예제를 봅시다.

 

The mail is delivered by the postman	The carpenter split the wood with an axe
A book by Tolstoy	The man went hunting with his dog
A painting by DaVinci	Shine a light with this torch
The cake was baked by the woman	He climbed the mountain with his friend
